眼科年會是全台眼科醫師一年一度齊聚一堂的盛會
不論是學術交流、研究發展發表、
好久不見的眼科朋友相聚
今年多了一項：
台灣眼內植入及屈光手術醫學會 Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of Taiwan, IIRST

邀請到歐洲重量級人物貴賓，#歐洲屈光白內障手術學會(ESCRS)的理事長

除此之外，還與我們 #台灣眼內植入及屈光手術學會（#IIRST)結盟，未來有更多的各項交流活動！

她是現任歐洲屈光白內障手術學會(ESCRS)的理事長，另一位 #Burkhard Dick, 是接任的理事長

身為一名女性眼外科醫師，同時兼任兩名孩子的母親，她的訴說與觸動不同同意更多，更是熱淚盈眶，
她懂得當年訓練的辛苦、她懂得女性醫師兼顧家庭與職業的難得。
那般數不盡的難熬夜晚、挑燈夜戰、處理困難病例輾轉難眠、回家後繼續與孩子們奮戰、奮戰完太陽升起與事業再戰，她懂得、全世界都面臨一樣的困境。
感覺不孤單。

原以為這麼偉大的女性我需要戰戰兢兢地與她討論這博士論文研究、眼科困難case的處理、對不規則散光的看法與解決、對白內障水晶體計算的種種眉角討論。
沒想到一開始的熱情洋溢與笑容可掬，第一眼就融化了一切。開啟了多重文化體驗、輪番美食上陣之旅。

交流期間，我們聊遍了眼科領域的方方面面：從特殊病例的深度討論、現今醫護人力資源的挑戰，到國際競爭與廠商關係帶來的連鎖反應。我們也交流了對各國公私立保險制度與臨床實務的觀察，眼科患者的性格特質、她分享寶貴的手術心得與經驗，我更向她介紹了竹科新城特有的醫療文化，她也給足了相對應的心得分享。
談話內容從專業知識到生活日常，從嚴肅的議題到輕鬆的趣聞，無所不談。原來，這位站在世界頂峰的巨擘，竟是如此謙和、溫暖且與人為善。

除了擔任 ESCRS (歐洲白內障和屈光手術學會) 現任主席（她是該學會首位葡萄牙籍女性主席）之外，她還有多重身份：

Centuries ago, Portuguese explorers, guided by their mastery of navigation, sailed to the other side of the world and discovered this breathtaking island: “Ilha Formosa!” This exclamation sparked a beautiful historical connection that endures to this day.

For us in Taiwan, “Formosa” is a cherished nickname; for Portugal, it remains a testament to their extraordinary maritime achievements.

The 66th Annual Meeting of the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan #TOS

Our annual meeting is the hallmark event where ophthalmologists from across the nation gather to share academic insights, present research breakthroughs, and reunite with long-time friends.

This year was exceptionally special: our university healthcare system had the distinct honor of hosting a heavyweight guest—the President of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons #ESCRS

🏆Furthermore, we celebrated a new alliance between ESCRS and the Taiwan Society of Intraocular Lens and Refractive Surgery (#IIRST), paving the way for vibrant international exchange in the years to come.

A Personal Reflection As a female ophthalmic surgeon and a mother of two myself, her words resonated with me on a profound level—they brought tears to my eyes. She knows. She understands the grueling years of training, the delicate art of balancing a home and a career. She knows the sleepless nights spent worrying over difficult cases, only to return home to “battle” with the kids, before rising with the sun to fight for her career once more. Knowing that a leader of her stature shares these universal struggles makes me feel far less alone. I had expected to be nervous, preparing to discuss the technicalities of her PhD, complex cases, irregular astigmatism, or the nuances of IOL calculations. Instead, I was met with such warmth and a radiant smile that all my trepidation melted away instantly. What began as a professional meeting transformed into a journey of multicultural exchange and a celebration of gourmet delights.

During our time together, our conversations spanned every facet of the ophthalmic world: from in-depth discussions on complex clinical cases and the pressing challenges of healthcare human resources, to the ripple effects of international competition and industry-provider dynamics. We exchanged observations on the interplay between public and private insurance systems and their clinical impact across different countries. I also had the pleasure of introducing her to the unique medical culture of the Hsinchu Science Park area, sharing insights into the distinct personalities of local patients and my own surgical experiences—to which she responded with incredibly thoughtful perspectives of her own.

Our dialogue flowed seamlessly from professional expertise to daily life, and from solemn systemic issues to lighthearted anecdotes. It was truly moving to discover that this global titan, standing at the very pinnacle of her field, is a person of such profound humility, warmth, and genuine kindness.

1. #The Balancing Act She reflects on the common struggle of women in high-intensity surgical specialties—the pressure of long residency years in Portugal often coincides with the prime years for starting a family. The immense personal sacrifice required for complex cataract and refractive training can be difficult to reconcile with the demands of pregnancy and childcare.

2. #A Vision for Equity Driven by her own experiences, she has made Gender Equity and Inclusivity a cornerstone of her presidency. By advocating for structural reforms—such as simulation-based training—she provides women with the flexibility to master surgical skills outside the operating room, making a career in excellence more accessible to everyone, regardless of their family responsibilities.
